Can someone confirm this? I won't believe it until I see pictures... or at least a more dependable, non-hearsay source.

Subject: Fwd: JANDEK PLAYED THE INSTAL FESTIVAL GLASGOW TODAY!!!!!!

This is not a hoax! FUCKIN' JANDEK.!

I turned up early to catch kan mikami when Richard youngs came on and
played bass and the Drummer ffrom scatter played uh, drums. Then this
thin guy dressed in black with a hat ambles onstage. he played a
surprisingly expensive looking fender semi acoustic with no soundhole.
once he started playing I thought "who is this prick ripping off
jandek" there was no mistaking the vocals and guitar playing but i
couldn't take it in that it was really him. I was sitting beside some
reviewer guy from the wire who confirmed it. he also said that he only
agreed to do it if it wasn't announced The band really rocked they had
a loose groove going most of the time. Jandek sang "lets get wild" on
one song and they crowd at the front were digging it. I'm quite sure
90% of people hadn't a clue. The Janster smiled after two songs so i
cheered louder hoping he'd get a taste of adulation. then i was afraid
he'd freak out. i can honestly say he was enjoying himself and was
totally at home on stage. He also sang about doing his washing in a
deadpan way. and about a five year old girl who broke his heart. There
was no in between song banter surprise, surprise.
It was simply a great gig even if it took a couple of songs to get
into it. I'm sorry i can't describe it more but i'm honestly still in
shock and my brain is addled by beer and all the other amazing music i
heard today

I know some of you won't beleive this until the wire or something
comes out but i just had to tell people.

Good night,

Gavin

I don't think I believe it. It says the crowd was enjoying it, and I seriously doubt any crowd who didn't know what to expect would "dig it."

This is a festival with Kan Mikami and Richard Youngs so it's not your normal crowd. No it's a crowd with great taste; many of who will have flown halfway around the world to be there.

it's true.

i was there. all i can say is that as someone who owns jandek records and even LIKES him, it was hard to be 100%. but why would it be a joke? i think we can safely say it was him.

There's been another post to the Jandek list at mylist.com, from another Instal attendee.

Subject: [Jandek] jandek live

i just got in from a day out at the instal 04 festival in glasgow where jandek played his first ( i presume ) performance alongside alexander neilson on drums and richard youngs on bass. i had no idea that jandek would be playing and it was quite a surprise. totally unexpected and i thought unfeasible that he would play with other musicians. but it somehow worked really well. they rehearsed beforehand, jandek played electric guitar. and when they finished he disappeared. i was moved to tears a few times. but intrigued and slightly spooked by it all. i have been listening to jandek for probably two years now, and have every cd apart from his latest one. i was surprised that his live performance was just like his cds. like, he's for real man. i found him quite sinister or perhaps creepy, but i think creepy is too strong a word. he will issue the performance as an album on corwood apparently and also a dvd of the gig. he's also going to stay in touch with alex and richard and maybe play some more in the future.

Crikey... Thanks a lot for that. That's the most definitive/informative response I've seen so far.

Interesting

I've seen two pictures:
-I've re-hosted them on my server:

http://pod.ath.cx/jandeklive.JPG
http://pod.ath.cx/jandeklive1.JPG

If, for whatever reason, it is Jandek then we have to commend him
for poking his head out of his Texas home and actually gigging in
front of an audience.

The pictures seem to confirm it's him, or an amazing lifelike
simulation.

Thought: why gig in Scotland (why not?) for your first gig?
I suppose he was worried he'd bump into co-workers from his
corporate day job. Think about that.

Re: Interesting

yeah, i've seen all the pictures now. it's definitely him. my guess is that somebody at this festival had the wingnut idea to ask Jandek to play, probably thinking he'd never say yes... and then he did. Who knows? Maybe it was more preconceived than that. Either way, I NEED that DVD! :)

doh!

unbelievable! I was there, and had no clue who he was - doh!

I’ve heard a few songs by jandek, and read some articles about him, but it never clicked that it was him on stage. I’m guessing most people had no idea who he was either - I didn’t hear his name mentioned once the entire day. But now looking at his record covers, it was definitely him.

Anyway, I wandered in late, and saw my friend alex was playing drums on stage with a tall and very skinny looking guy. I spoke to alex the day before, but he never mentioned anything - he plays in about 20 bands, so I wasn’t too surprised. I also saw ‘him’ (jandek) the day before (wearing the same hat and suit) watching a really average performance by six organs of admittance - so I thought he was maybe just from Glasgow?

The crowd were receptive, but no-one seemed that bothered, apart from a couple of people - notably david keenan (writes for the wire) getting sort of over exited at the front of the stage, and a few standing up to clap at the end. But other than that, he was totally eclipsed by keiji hano and masayoshi urabe who also played later that day (sadly not together though). The only thing that seemed sort of strange for jandek’s set, was there was a few video camera’s scattered about - but until I saw this entry here, I still didn’t realise that’s who was on stage. The music (base and drums) was definitely to a degree improvised, with alex and Richard taking cues of the singer, or working from a really basic idea and building on that (but I don’t know much, so maybe it wasn’t? don‘t listen to me).

for all/any obsessives - it was a godin electric guitar. they're not too expensive, but pretty good sounding. and I don’t mean this in any disrespectful way, more just as an observation, but his face was a total shell.

If I did know who he was I’d have got their earlier and listened with a bit more effort, but as I said before, even if I had, he was absolutely nothing compared to the intensity of masayoshi urabe, who played about an hour later.

(disclaimer: that’s all just my opinions, and just thought I’d add my voice here).

Re: doh!

ahhh!! you're killing me! :) It sounds like it was an amazing performance. I'm told he'll be putting out a DVD of the performance on Corwood, which explains the video cameras. Thanks for the recap.

I have actually been saying this exact same thing all day. It's so unbelievably surreal.

[info]matariki

October 18 2004, 21:32:52 UTC 7 years ago

from the Herald: A real coup came with Sunday's unannounced appearance of legendary Texan musician, Jandek, who's released 28 albums but, until now, has never played live. Accompanied by Richard Youngs on bass and Lucky Luke's drummer, Jandek's existential howls come on like a loucher, less histrionic Birthday Party. A welcome slab of fire and steel in a still important event that needs to get back to the future.
Meanwhile the Scotsman gives a good review but doesn't mention Jandek (which gives a clue as to the calibre of the other acts involved if anyone still remains to be convinced.) Would've loved to've seen Kan Mikami play.

Thoughts

Looking at the picture doesn't he look amazing?

Rock star thin - natty black suit, scary black hat,
suave black Godin semi-acoustic.

I always wondered what he would look like if he
gigged and he exceeded every expectation.

Good on you, Janky.

Re: Thoughts

I have been staring at the picture constantly. It's not just that it's him, it's that it looks SO surreal. I'm in awe of the whole thing. It was so perfectly executed. The sound, the look, everything. Let this be a lesson to anyone who ever claimed that Jandek doesn't know what he's doing. EVERYTHING is intentional.

(From: http://mylist.net/archives/jandek/2004-October/000487.html)

This is David Tibet from Current 93, who played on the Saturday night at the Instal festival.

I can absolutely confirm it was JANDEK live at 5pm on Sunday 17th at the Instal Festival put on by Barry Esson.

He played for an hour with Richard Youngs on bass and Alex Neilsen on drums.

The whole show came about after 7 months of secret negotiations and was done on the basis that Jandek's name was not used in ANY of the publicity at ANY time.

It was absolutely amazing--JANDEK was happy and relaxed and looked great and as Godlike as it comes.

Watch this space... JANDEK is on the loose and he is HUNGRY!!!!!!!

followup from David Tibet:

Dear All:

this is David Tibet again with some more information for you.

1)JANDEK was absolutely not announced; part of the deal was that no-one would be informed who was playing, just that there was a mystery guest.People turned up at 5 and someone near my wife said: 'There is someone impersonating Jandek on stage.' Then he said: 'F**K! It IS Jandek....'

2) He played for an hour, and used the lyric stand that I used (that was bought for me) the night before. The band rehearsed just once, earier the same day. They were stunning, stunning, stunning--and I do know as I am a MASSIVE fan and have every single vinyl, every CD and even the bar-code/non-bar-code variant release.

3)He never referred to himself as JANDEK--the word was not used at ANY time. He was there as 'a representative from Corwood Industries.'

4)He did not stay in the same hotel as any of the bands, who did not know he was playing either.

5) He did not attend the fetival, except briefly, when SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE were playing. He didn't go for meals or drinks with any of the bands, and didn't attned the post-show party at the hotel. The only person who speok to him was the band and the promoter and his partner.

6)There are lots of other bits I could add, but can't as they are confidential... but maybe they will come out later. Or not.

ALSO A REQUEST: my wife took a lot of photos. I need to get a CDR of the MP3s; if anyone can send me this CDR I will send them a CDR of the photos she took.

This is all incredibly interesting. One thing that is now for certain (and can finally be put to rest) is that Jandek DOES know what he's doing on all accounts (musically, intellectually, stylistically, whatever). Seeing as some folks were under the impression to the contrary (as though he was some drooling clueless brained moron).
